Netherlands Joins Moldova In Standing Firm To Support EU Candidate Status For Ukraine

The European Commission issued an opinion on Friday recommending that Ukraine be granted European Union candidate status. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte called the European Commission’s recommendation a “reasonable compromise,” adding that both supporters and opponents of Ukraine’s candidacy can agree with this conclusion. The decision will pave way for the EU leaders to sign off recommendation next week Thursday.

The Commission on Friday also proposed making Moldova an EU membership candidate. The EU's executive said that this was premised on the understanding that the country would carry out reforms. Von der Leyen said that Moldova  "is on a real pro-reform, anti-corruption and European path," adding, "It still has a long way to go. But we believe it has the potential to live up to the criteria."

The move regarding Ukraine took on an air of greater inevitability on Wednesday, when the leaders of France, Germany, Italy and Romania announced their support for Ukraine’s pathway during a visit to Kyiv. And Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission’s president, opened Friday’s meeting of E.U. commissioners in Brussels wearing a blue shirt and a yellow blazer, Ukraine’s national colors.

But the Commission’s recommendation on Friday is just the first step on a long road. The ultimate decision will be in the hands of European Union leaders who will meet June 23 and 24 in Brussels to tackle the thorny question.

Netherlands have now announced that they are firm and ready to support the opinion that European Commission gave out in favour of Ukraine.
